MAX BACCANELLO

MAX BACCANELLO

SYMPHONY OF WINGS

'My passion lies in painting from life, where I am captivated by the organic process of translating my immediate reality onto canvas.’

  • The history of painting birds, rooted in ancient cave paintings and Egyptian tombs, has evolved through the centuries, reflecting humanity's enduring fascination with avian beauty and symbolism. From the detailed illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages to the scientifically precise works of the Renaissance, artists have continually sought to capture the essence of birds. Albrecht Dürer, a Renaissance master, is notable for his meticulous studies and paintings of birds, where he combined artistic skill with an almost scientific precision, setting a standard for future ornithological art. The 18th and 19th centuries furthered this evolution with John James Audubon and John Gould producing comprehensive bird illustrations that contributed significantly to ornithology.

In this rich tradition, contemporary artist Maximillion Baccanello contributes a unique and innovative approach. A fine artist and portrait painter based in Shropshire, Maximillion has been fascinated by portraiture from a young age. The human face, with its unique capacity for character and communication, serves as a constant inspiration for his imagination. Maximillion completed his studies at Charles Cecil Studios in Italy from 2008 to 2011. Subsequently, he carried out portrait commissions in oil and charcoal, as well as meticulous still life paintings, from his Shropshire studio.

His passion lies in painting from life, utilising the organic process of translating immediate reality onto canvas. This enthusiasm is complemented by a profound curiosity about texture, layers, and edges. Maximillion constantly explores innovative methods to convey the tactile and characterful aspects of what he sees through the medium of paint in both his still life and figurative pieces.

For his upcoming exhibition, Baccanello will paint real, taxidermy birds from life, merging historical reverence with modern technique. This method not only honors the meticulous studies of past masters but also brings a tangible, lifelike presence to his work, offering viewers an intimate connection with the avian subjects and continuing the dialogue between art, nature, and scientific observation.
