From blank canvas to solo show, Green & Stone can help every step of the way.

From framing and art materials to gallery and exhibition specialists.

Green & Stone, the internationally renowned art shop, began trading on the King’s Road, Chelsea, over 90 years ago. In 2018 we made the exciting move to brand-new premises in the Chelsea Quarter—so named for the crossroads intersecting Old Church Street and the Fulham Road. Retaining all our original character we are now perfectly situated in an area replete with independent boutique shops specialising in interior design, rare books, antiques and furniture.

The Gallery at Green & Stone held its inaugural exhibition in 2018 for the internationally acclaimed artist, Emma Sergeant. Subsequent exhibitors include George Ciancimino, Olivia Stanton, Bridgeman Editions, Manolo Blahnik and Nneka Uzoigwe.

The Gallery at Green & Stone is unlike traditional galleries. Not only are we a hire space giving full flexibility to artists regarding the length of exhibition and number of participating artists, but, unlike other hire spaces, we also offer a wealth of additional support. Your hire rate includes a private view, window graphics, access to our mailing list and crucially, a full-time Gallery Manager to oversee your exhibition. Having the gallery attached to one of the most famous art shops in Europe ensures all exhibitions have a busy footfall.

As a gallery, we specialise in exhibition management, organising your entire exhibition from inventory and archive to graphic design and marketing. As well as operating as a for-hire space, we are also dedicated to promoting emerging artists. Each year we host two open calls in search of emerging talent. The first prize of our Summer Exhibition is a fully funded solo show. Previous winners include Nneka Uzoigwe and Michael Slusakowicz. Since exhibiting with us, both artists have soared within the artistic community. We take pride in being the first rung on the ladder of success for many artists. As our community of artists grows, we now offer 4 commission-based exhibitions a year, curated by us in partnership with the chosen artists. In this sense, we are a gallery orientated towards emerging artists with incredible talent and potential. The work we exhibit is unique, contemporary and affordable. We take pride in being the only gallery in London to operate in this way and offer the service we do. Our growing community is testimony to the success of our model. Our ambition is to create a space that will become a major resource upon which artists, collectors, researchers, curators, and the broader artistic community might draw and benefit in the future.

  • Green & Stone has been described as one of the most friendly and enchanting shops to visit in London and we are delighted to say that our staff (all exhibiting artists) are always on hand to offer expert help and specialist advice about materials and techniques. • GREEN & STONE of CHELSEA est. 1927

Green & Stone of Chelsea, picture framers and supplier of specialist art materials, was first established on the King’s Road in Chelsea in 1927 when Mr Alfred Green and his sons Alfie and Peter were invited to work from the Chenil Gallery by its directors, Augustus John and Bernard Shaw.

In 1934, Green & Stone relocated a 5 minute walk away to 259 King’s Road, a premises previously run as a shop for the Women’s Suffragette Movement. From here Mr Green and his sons continued to run the shop primarily as a picture framing business, offering only a small selection of art materials.

In 1972 my father, Mr Rodney Baldwin, first set foot in the store as trainee manager, eventually buying the business from the Greens in 1978. Since then, he oversaw the successful growth of the framing department, focusing on high quality, hand made frames. The most marked change in the business was the growth of the art materials section. This has increased tenfold, making Green & Stone one of the largest retailers of Fine Art Materials in Europe. Yet its expansion has not led to the business losing any of its traditional charm, Mr Baldwin’s ethos of old fashioned, high quality service is paramount to the shop’s raison d’être.
