MANDY HUDSON & RACHEL DONALD

PAINTING & MAKING

2–14 October 2023, 10.00–17.00

  • “This is the first group of paintings that I have shown since moving from London to Kent. I live in part of an old house and my studio is in a small room, which has influenced the scale and subjects in my painting. These are mainly still life oil paintings with a focus on accidental arrangements I come across in everyday life. Recently, I have been increasingly drawn to objects that are timeless: collections of things in flea markets, car-boot sales, and second-hand shops, also the more formalised arrangements of shop windows. Alongside these influences, my work has also been inspired by the plants and debris I see on walks along the Thames estuary near where I live. I am interested in the individual character of things and exploring their influence on the way I paint them.”

The act of curation informs Rachel's work, which is influenced by the natural environment and Victorian mementos and objects. Using the handmade approaches of collage and weaving, wildlife and natural spaces are reimagined as tactile and sensory fleeting moments. Her recent work on Hedgerow Rings and a series of bird reliefs, responds to walking and foraging the rural lanes and surrounding marshlands on the Norfolk Broads near her home. The naturalist Ted Ellis’ Norfolk dioramas and the traditional Marshman's Cottage at How Hill have been another source of inspiration. Each piece is created individually and developed slowly over a period of time, echoing historical rural crafts. The spinning Hedgerow Rings are created from woven strands of found materials and textiles remnants, including vintage silk. The bird reliefs are made of hand painted papier-mâché.
