ADEBANJI ALADE

Adebanji Alade, otherwise known as The Addictive Sketcher, regularly features on the BBC’s The One Show, and can often be found sketching travellers on the London Underground.

He trained at Yaba College of Technology in Nigeria, later obtaining a diploma in portraiture from Heatherley’s School of Fine Art in Chelsea, where he now teaches.

He is also the founder of The Addictive Sketchers Movement (his online art school), where he inspires and teaches students worldwide how to sketch anything they see accurately and confidently.

Adebanji is the president of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters; a full member of The Guild of Fine Art in Nigeria; and in 2014, was elected to the council of the Chelsea Art Society. He also belongs to Urban Sketchers Worldwide and Plein Air Brotherhood.

What Adebanji is looking for:

‘I am thrilled to be part of the judging panel for The Green & Stone Summer Exhibition.

This year I’ll be looking out for work that has something really special about it. Obviously, the drawing and composition have to be great, that’s the foundation, but beyond that, it has to be authentic, original and ready to blow me off my feet.

If you’ve got something like this in you, then this is it’.

PROFESSOR ALIXE BOVEY

Dr. Alixe Bovey is The Courtauld’s Executive Dean and Deputy Director and a member of the History of Art department.

She belongs to The Courtauld’s senior management team. She leads the academic strategy and the departments that comprise their Academic Directorate, including History of Art, Conservation, Student and Academic Services, Library Services, and Public Programmes.

She is a specialist in the art and culture of the Middle Ages, with interests in illuminated manuscripts, visual storytelling, and the relationship between myth and material culture across historical periods and geographical boundaries.

She teaches The Courtauld’s MA History of Art special option, The Supernatural Middle Ages: Images of the Extraordinary.

What Alixe is looking for:

‘I am looking for arresting images that show a distinctive engagement with materials, techniques, composition, and subject matter. As an art historian, I take a particular interest in how artists grapple with the arts of the past, however defined. And I’m keenly interested in how artists respond to the pressures and pleasures of the times we’re living in’.

MENG ZHOU

Meng Zhou received his Master’s Degree from The Royal College of Arts and his BA in Painting from Camberwell College of Arts,

‘My work addresses issues of ecology, cultural heritage, notions of transition and transformation. Working across installation, moving image, painting, and sculpture, my work examines my reflection on human responsibilities to the cultural and ecological environment, and our shared heritage.

Working with found materials, natural curiosities, traditional and more modern media, and drawing on mythologies and folklore, my work addresses the impacts of ecology, cultural heritage and tradition on modern subjectivities. By interested in borrowing, bricolage and pastiche, I am interested in drawing out moments of conversation and of conflict between tradition and modernity to illuminate where we are now. The works I create are composites drawn from a combination of dreamscapes, material culture, and myth, always oscillating between figuration and abstraction.

Accidents and the unexpected invariably inform the direction of my work. I envisage each interaction with materials as a kind of journey rather than a translation of form, and I am constantly drawn back to the tactile nature of my materials.’

What Meng is looking for:

‘‘I look forward to encountering works brimming with energy and passion, works that defy definition in both form and structure, showcasing individual insights and applications.

In a time of downturn, I hope to see uplifting works that can inspire and excite a wider audience.’

The Summer Exhibition involves a two-stage selection.

The first Pre-Selection takes place online.

The second Final Selection takes place in the gallery. If you are Pre-Selected, you must deliver your Work to the Gallery on the designated delivery day.

If your work is not selected for the Final Selection, you must collect your piece on the designated collection day.

To submit work, please go to online entry and complete the entry form where you will be asked to enter your details and pay for your submission. Please note that payment does NOT mean your application is complete. To complete your application you must upload an image of your work(s). If you have successfully registered you will be able to edit your entry via the online entry tab.

You are free to go back and make any changes up until the deadline which is 12 noon (BST) on Friday 12 May 2024. After this point your entry will be automatically recorded, as shown at that time.

All work must be submitted online by the Deadline. Pre-selection from online entries will take place, after which longlisted works should be delivered to The Gallery at Green & Stone, London. Final Selection will then take place in the Gallery. Works not selected to Hang must be collected immediately but will be included in our Online Exhibition.

Entry is £20 per artwork, with a maximum of 3 artworks to submit.

Young artists (aged 30 or under at 15/05/2024) can submit work at a discounted rate of £15.

All two-dimensional works pre-selected/long-listed must be framed upon delivery for final selection.

The Work must be framed in a simple, neutral-coloured frame (white, black or light oak). If you would like to frame your work in something different, please email thegallery@greenandstone.com to check your choice.

Only simple white and off-white (not cream) mounts are acceptable. If selected work arrives mounted in a coloured, black or elaborate mount, this will be changed at the expense of the artist.

Metal, glass and perspex clip frames are not acceptable. Glazed Works with unprotected glass edges are inadmissible. Diffused picture glass is unacceptable.

Framing of works is the responsibility of the artist and must be carried out prior to delivery.

All works must be exhibition-ready. Suitable hanging fixtures should be supplied, sufficient to carry the weight of the work. We accept D-rings and wire. We do not accept mirror plates.

Artists are reminded that it is highly recommended that the exhibiting artists insure with a reputable insurance company their works of art for their market value.

The Gallery is at liberty to change any frame delivered to the Gallery if it does not abide by these terms. This will be at the expense of the artist. Before payment is required, the Gallery will contact the artist.

Works should be delivered unwrapped with forms and labels. Please complete all labels carefully and attach them to the Works. In particular, please attach labels to the back of picture frames and to the bottom of sculptures. The exhibition catalogue is compiled from the information on the form you provide when you submit it digitally so please complete it accurately.

Artists are responsible for insuring their own work. All works accepted for exhibition will be displayed entirely at the artists' risk and organisers and the gallery will not accept liability for loss or damage occurring during the exhibition.

Dates for collection of Works will be published on the Gallery at Green & Stone Website. These are the ONLY days that Works can be collected from Green & Stone. Please ensure that arrangements are made for your Works to be collected on the days specified. Please note that we cannot wrap Works for collection. If you pay for an entry and then realise you cannot make these dates you will NOT receive a refund.

Any uncollected Works will be removed from Green & Stone after the collection days and stored by an independent courier company at the artist's expense.

The Gallery can give no information or warranty as to storage charges made by any other company.

If the Works are not collected or claimed by, or on behalf of, the relevant artist within 1 month of the last collection day, Green & Stone will be entitled to destroy, sell, or otherwise dispose of the Works without consent and without prior notification to the artist. The artist hereby agrees that it will not be entitled to any compensation as a result of the aforementioned destruction, sale or disposal of the Works by Green & Stone in accordance with this clause.
