Artist Statement

Mark Curtis Hughes is a UK based artist specialising in freehand papercuts; drawing with a knife. Mark specialised in woodcut prints during his Master’s degree and the process of papercutting grew out of a need to create similar mark making, but in a more expressive and immediate way. For Mark, the act of cutting the paper is an excavation. There is depth and meaning hidden beneath the surface of the paper that needs to be revealed.

Many of Mark’s compositions begin with a marketplace, Liminal, busy places full of exchange, custom and tension. These passing places reflect an element of who we are and what traditions, expectations and aspirations we carry with us. The Market is there one day, and then it’s gone.
