Artist Statement
The most important quality in art for me is emotion, which is why much of my work depicts people. I often seek soulful connections between my subject and the viewer. The interlinking of the senses subconsciously informs my interest by immersing the energy of ephemeral forms of art such as dance, performance and music, into a permanent image which captures a freeze frame in a moment of chaos. I consider art and dance to be interconnected in that they are forms of language with no barriers or limits to the way they communicate.
I am also inspired by the balance between strength and elegance and this draws me towards subjects such as dancers and also to horses. Capturing grace, movement and underlying strength is a passion for me. My depiction of the male danseur in my two submission pieces was inspired by my discovery, as a dancer myself, that there are some traditions in the world of classical ballet which I feel sometimes restrict the freedom and creative nature of dance. Male ballet dancers are confined traditionally to certain roles, steps and clothing. Depicting this dancer challenging those gender barriers, I wanted to highlight this, for example: why shouldn't male dancers be able to train en pointe? To further emphasize this particular issue, I used my old pair of pointe shoes in my sculpture piece.
My favourite mediums include: lithographic drawing ink; ink and bleach; oil and pyrography.
