Artist Statement
Liza Kelly's work is concerned with the everyday – the small things, places, people and encounters that make up the most part of what happens in life. She often begins with observational studies then adds elements from memory and imagination. Working in this way allows her to use an observational starting point in different ways, allowing a freer interpretation of subject matter and colour. In her work, Liza is interested in colour, shape and pattern and how these elements interact with each other.
During 2022, Liza completed the Online Drawing Development Year with the Royal Drawing School. This programme sparked an interest in using more experimental materials and processes in her work. The pieces submitted for consideration are experimental drypoint prints, produced using tetrapak 'plates' on a small studio etching press. The tetrapak printing process results in interesting marks, lines and textures - some inherent in the 'plate' and others created by the artist. The tetrapak 'plate' is quite fragile so only a very limited number of prints can be taken and each one has subtle differences. These elements of chance, brought about through material and process, add to the finished work.
Liza Kelly is based in Dublin, Ireland. She holds a BFA (Printmaking) from the National College of Art and Design, an MA in Professional Design Practice from TU Dublin and recently completed the Online Drawing Development Year at the Royal Drawing School. As well as her artistic practice she works as a professional designer.
