Artist Statement

I was born in the UK but spent a great deal of my childhood moving from one country to another; this developed into a love of travel and experiencing new places.

Through painting I convey my experience of the landscape. I aim to describe a space, what it is to move through, round and over a landscape, touching and being touched by the elements.

Drawing the landscape is at the heart of my work, and this is where I begin, working in charcoal on location. I find that drawing ‘en plein air’ is a more solid way of absorbing the sense of place, the sounds and the calm I feel when I am surrounded by nature.

I work from these drawings back in my studio. I use layers upon layers of vibrant colour to recreate that experience and convey my love of the outdoors.

Seeing the bright sunshine radiate through tree leaves and feeling that light and warmth on my body, fills me with hope for the future. An emotional response and a sense of place is so important to me.

I see the natural world as a catalyst for my work; these elements of nature continue to energise and inspire me.
