Artist Statement

I work with humble found materials: text harvested from abandoned books, wriggling cartographic forms from a disparate selection of maps, or subtly nuanced paint samples.

From a distance, the works are minimal abstract reliefs but as one approaches, the fine detail becomes clear.

My text works comprise snippets of quasi-poetic information arrayed in tiny terraces - a taxonomy of fonts, paper textures and shades. 'Your armpits are day but your breasts are night' is an elliptical relief constructed from 90 found facts, some absurd, some wise; some true, some less so.

In my map works, graphic languages jostle for superiority as they proclaim the significance of their little patch of the earth. 'Reservoir' uses original map fragments describing areas of water so that the whole becomes a circle of droplets, a Petri dish or puddle.

My paint sample drawings are generative that is to say, they grow from the centre like complex domino games or jigsaw puzzles, each piece clicking alongside the last. The choice of shades and the method produce crowded, geometric dramas.
