Artist Statement
I created this painting as part of a series of explorations of flowers and plants. I am fascinated by the transitory nature of the flowers whilst using a painting medium which is slow and often painstaking to execute and which dries very quickly. The tension this creates is exciting and increases the intensity of focus.
I paint using Egg tempera, mixing the pigments myself with egg and building thin transparent layers of colour which give the painting a luminous quality. For delicate flowers it is a particularly effective technique. Painting on gesso panels also increases the transparency of the colour. I make these panels myself and being involved in the whole production process of the painting from start to finish is important to me.
My work continues in this long tradition of meditative painting, using egg tempera, which stretches back to Early Renaissance times. However, my subject matter is contemporary, such as depicting brightly coloured plastic toys and robots in my still life paintings and children playing outside in my urban landscapes.
