Artist Statement

My Trees are essentially portraits, chosen for their location and personal meaning. The majority of each painting is created en plein air and then completed in the studio. Inspired in part by mythology, paganism and xylophobia, I am drawn to the unexpected fear found within Rococo fripperies and in fete galante painting - although there are no figures in my works. Instead, they concentrate on what might be present in anticipation of or after an event.

In each painting there is a consistent influence from the Aboriginal Dreamtime - the intrinsic dots act as a screen or filter to create ambiguity, while retaining the original indigenous idea of connection to earth and land.
