Artist Statement
March 2022 saw Carmichael leaving a successful finance career in London to pursue an instinctive passion for sculpture. Carmichael was under the tutelage of Raffaello Romanelli at the renowned Studio Galleria Romanelli in Florence. Romanelli has placed Carmichael in the top 1% of students he’s taught, and the artist has been labelled as ‘one to watch’ by the industry. This was made evident with Carmichael’s first bronzes selling out world-wide within months, gaining a key following and waitlist for commissions.
The artist’s main focus has been the equine form, inspired by a lifetime spent in the saddle at a local and international level. By combining a true appreciation for her subjects’ personalities with an ever-expanding knowledge of anatomy and tack. This extends into Carmichael’s appreciation for nature and large range of other animals. Carmichael captures the spirit and soul of each animal she works with, and offers an almost ‘real life’ interaction for the viewer.
“Working with clay was love at first touch. My inspiration grows each day, and most particularly after a day among animals in the British countryside or learning from the old Masters both in painting and sculpture namely Stubbs, Michelangelo and Rubens. It is an honour to cast important horses and figures for clients seeking a timeless commemoration, and to contribute to our collective public memory. I feel unbelievably lucky to have found this passion for sculpture, which I can pair with my love of horses and other animals, and hopefully give joy to many people.”
