Artist Statement

My creative practice mainly comes from drawing outside using my sketchbook to develop ideas into paintings and mixed media art. I initially studied Graphic Design then Art and Design in Social Context at Dartington College of Arts which both influence my work. I'm inspired by daily observations in life, using expressive marks in response to what I see around me. Being in the moment gives me a great sense of connection to the natural landscape and coast of South Devon. It's a process that's constantly evolving, and wanting to show this in my work. I often carry a sketchbook with me and enjoy working from life, recording moments in time, experimenting with different materials and collecting observations to use in my work. This helps me to use colour, texture and movement, also memory and imagination as I develop these into mixed media work. My development of using charcoal and ink has enabled more freedom in expressing impressions of the landscape of how I see it and feel the natural environment in that moment.
