Artist Statement
Working through most of my education and early career, I have used oil paints and graphite to create figurative, and representational forms of contemporary art. Through recent studio practices, this has developed into experimentation with oil pastels. Creating layered textures with undertones of warmth or cool colors found in oil painting and rendering textures achieved in graphite drawings.
The somewhat ordinary circumstances of the scenes depicted are transformed through the variety of textures oil pastel has to offer. The scene becomes a dreamlike memory of important fragments of life, something I have found extended from scenes in works of Vermeer.
The essence of displaying beauty from the everyday carries forward into still-life drawings. Highlighting the chromatic vibrancy of lemons and oranges with oil pastel, again to bring more life to them. Hoping to just create something still, and visually pleasing to an ever-moving, fast-paced, modern world.
