Artist Statement
My practice, at present mostly drawing using graphite, charcoal and pencil, takes the wild, remote and weather-worn landscape of Exmoor as inspiration. The ancient, native trees, deep valleys and changeable skies are subjects that I return to again and again, rarely venturing more than a few miles from base.
Knowing a place intimately with all its moods and intentionally exploring an area in order to absorb it totally, is fundamental to my desire to create. My choice of materials and the physical action of drawing; chiselling and sculpting the forms and tones seem appropriate to this moorland subject. I convey the sense of changing shadow and light and aspire to engender in viewers a sense of place and timelessness.
