Artist Statement

The seashore is my inspiration; ideas form when walking and observing. My creative process starts with three-dimensional paper “sketches” exploring form and scale; some are then developed as woven samples experimenting with texture and shape. I consider the qualities of the subject, its shape and feel, and explore these using different materials and careful choice of colour and weaving techniques. Each piece is shaped, reshaped then manipulated into new forms; those constructed with wire and stiff fibres hold their shape, others form their own. My tapestries are woven sculptures rather than images; solid, tactile, textured pieces inspired by the seashore and geology of Scotland’s western isles.
