Artist Statement

In my paintings, I draw inspiration from Pronkstilleven, and 17th-century Flemish style of still life painting. Through my works, I explore the relationship between humans and the foods we consume. I often paint exotic fruits and shellfish that were once prized and rare, but are now easily available and some are even considered cheap staples. I use layers of paint, starting with a monochromatic underpainting which is then brought into technicolour by applying multiple transparent layers of glazing. I finalise the paintings with crisp white highlights, to produce a pearlescent and almost intergalactic rendition of the original form. My paintings reflect the illusionary nature of abundance in modern society while borrowing heavily from the metaphors and techniques that drove classical still life paintings.
