Artist Statement
Encompassing the boundaries between painting and sculpture, Rowena explores the impact of cancer, which she is undergoing treatment for now. This is her second time on this journey after surviving it when she was nine. Her work is about the hole trauma leaves in our lives. As a point of similarity, her research focuses on the visual impact disease has on trees and leaves. The age of diagnosis is represented with her use of line in the abstract shapes. Her main aim for the work is that people can find strength from the colourful space. Sussex-based artist Rowena Hutchinson was born in 1998. Rowena studied at Edinburgh college of art, graduating in 2022. Recent exhibitions from this year: Renewed, Dundas Street Gallery – Edinburgh. Spare Rib exhibition, The Caves — Edinburgh. Summer residency exhibition, New York Academy of art — New York. Edinburgh Art Fair, O2 Academy — Edinburgh. Shortlisted Dentons Art Prize, 2023, London.
