Artist Statement
I am an emerging abstract artist, channelling my creativity through the fascinating realm of synaesthesia. I have the most common form, known as grapheme-colour synaesthesia. Within my mind, letters, numbers, names and places possess inherent and unwavering hues, while people - particularly those close to me (but not only) - have their distinct palette signatures, akin to fingerprints in the conventional world.
In my latest work I explore these associations and palette signatures to create alternative portraits. By delving into the depths of my subconscious and using a fusion of techniques and materials, I seek to capture the essence of my subjects in an abstract and unconventional manner illuminating their emotions, energy and spirit. The resulting pieces radiate with vibrant complexity, evoking a profound sense of movement and emotion that is both deeply personal and universal resonant.
My creative process for these alternative portraitures starts with almost meditative state of recalling the subject’s name, personality traits, sometimes their voice or places I associate with them e.g. the letters that make up their address or circumstances /places where I spent time with them – all of which form a rich colour palette for me to explore. If I don’t know my subject personally, e.g. a celebrity, I can still delve into the associations, which might be limited to the letters that make their name and some other factor that creates their colour signature in my mind and fires up my creativity.
