Artist Statement

I am a figurative painter concerned with the mythology of the image at the present moment. My work considers how we see ourselves as articulated by the visual authorities which govern our society, stemming from Debord's idea of the spectacle: tabloids, advertising, social media, and most recently AI. I am interested in how figurative painting, in relation to its history in Western Europe, can consider the role these somewhat transient figures can play in our lives.

My work starts with an emotion, most often the sense of a moment from my personal life, and then I work through a process of abstracting it into the most banal aspect of my reality. As a queer young person, these are more often than not camp rituals: hyper-fixating on Nicole Kidman or using Princess Diana as a vehicle for pathos.

My oeuvre, if that's not too pretentious a term for someone not yet 30, consists of works which create a hieroglyphic autobiography. They refuse translation and invite the viewer to make their own meaning of the thread of existence which ties them all together.
