‘Capturing the Quirky’

Join us for a loose and fun workshop with the incredible watercolour artist, Lisa Fulthorpe, where you will be taught and encouraged to ‘Capture the Quirky’. The session will begin with drawing animals and people using the method of the ‘blind contour’. Lisa will lead you through this method which involves carefully observing the outline and shapes of a subject while slowly drawing its contours in a continuous line without looking at the paper.

Attendees will expect to create humorous, wonky and startling compositions that defy any creative preconceptions; art that is truly original. Working in Lisa’s method facilitates a shift from the analytical way of thinking to one that which is intuitive and taps into the subconscious.

Building on the drawing process, the works will then be developed using pen and ink, and watercolour. Making fluid washes of colour with a simple palette of 3-4 colours, Lisa will demonstrate how to make the final tonal finish of her works, after which you will take home a charming work of art.

A range of photos will be provided of animals to draw, however we also encourage you to bring photos of your own furry friends.

All levels are welcome.

All art materials are provided by Green & Stone.

About Lisa Fulthorpe

Lisa is a filmmaker, screenwriter and lecturer in the arts. She took up drawing and watercolour painting during lockdown (when it was difficult to make films). This was primarily to keep her creativity going but also to help her write more visually.  She took classes with Suzie Poyntz at the Hanover centre, Brighton and became obsessed with drawing (something she hadn’t done since she was 5 years old). This soon developed into watercolour painting and also pen and ink drawing.

“I love exploring characters, sometimes animals, sometimes human. They tend to be quirky because I draw them from photos or real life using the technique of blind contour drawing. When I look down at the page at the end of the drawing, I'm never sure what I'll find - which is exciting and somehow taps into the way I'm feeling that day. So, in a way, these characters are part of my subconscious. I use sharp lines, flat watercolour and ink, surrounded by blank space. I use a simple palette of 3-4 colours which are often, but not always, non-naturalistic.  The forms, which are always 2 dimensional, are influenced by some of my favourite artists: Brueghel, Goya, Beardsley and Shiele - the latter is a huge influence on my work as an artist.”

Lisa has exhibited at Aire Place Studios, Leeds, at the ING Discerning Eye (2021) exhibition, Artists Open Houses, Brighton (2023), Works On Paper exhibition at the Gallery at Green and Stone (2023) and at their Summer Exhibition (2024) in Chelsea and at the RI Painters in Watercolour Exhibition (2023 and 2024), both at the Mall Galleries, London. She’s represented by Io Gallery in Brighton.
