‘Drawing the Portrait’

In this workshop, attendants will be taken through the fundamentals of portraiture drawing, working from one model holding a sustained pose over two days of sessions.

Using the method of comparative measurement, we will cover the various stages of drawing a portrait from the initial first marks focused on the larger proportions and gesture, the importance of shapes in capturing a likeness, value arrangement, form modelling, and finishing the drawing with consideration given to topics such as edges and line weight. Attendants will be toning their own paper with charcoal powder and have the option to work with graphite and/or charcoal on their drawings.

Stephanie will work alongside attendants rather than give a group demonstration in order to maximise model and one-to-one tuition time. This workshop is suitable for all levels of drawing ability and you will receive multiple critiques tailored to your individual requirements.

You should expect an enjoyable and informative weekend and to come away from the course with an overview of classical drawing methods that you can use to approach future work.

All art materials provided by Green & Stone.

About Stephanie Mills

Stephanie Mills is a contemporary British artist whose work is held in international collections, with collectors including public figures and leading institutions. Her work is exhibited both nationally and overseas including with prestigious organisations such as the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Society of Graphic Fine art. In 2022 Mills was shortlisted for both the Derwent Art Prize and the British Art Prize. In 2024 she received the Damian Greenish Drawing Award at the Gallery Green and Stone Summer Exhibition 2024.

Mills focuses on both portraiture and landscapes. For her portraiture work she is interested in creating more cinematic and atmospheric pieces whilst maintaining a strong emphasis on drawing and structure.

Through observing light and how it interplays with form she looks to create pieces that evoke a moment of quiet contemplation in the viewer. Through her use of colour, composition and mark making, her landscapes seek to describe the beauty of the natural world.
