THE STILL POINT

12–17 June 2023, 10.00–17.00

We are pleased to be hosting the launch of Sophie Brudenell-Bruce’s latest project, The Still Point, a collection of poems and illustrations in an edition of 190 copies, with a further special edition of 10 full leather bound copies.

This edition of poems and illustrations by Sophie Brudenell-Bruce has been printed by Nomad Letterpress on Magnani Pescia mould-made paper. The text has been digitally set in Spectrum by Mark Askam at Chesnut Editions and printed from magnesium plates. The plates as well are available to buy, framed, as they will never be printed again. The illustrations are a mixture of prints from original lino and litho blanket cuts, plus magnesium plate renders of the artist’s black and white originals. The bindings, to a design by the artist and featuring end papers printed by her using the carborundum simulacrum process, have been carried out by The Fine Book Bindery in Wellingborough.

  • From early childhood, I remember the joy of cutting sheets of paper and sewing them to make rudimentary notebooks, and working out how to bind them together.

Making books is a pleasure I have never grown out of. The difference now is that I’ve managed to find more talented craftspeople to help me fulfil this passion.

Collaboration with the Nomad Letterpress in Whittington and the Logan Press Binders in Irthlingborough resulted in the publication of my first book "Mummy’s Chocolate Cake" in 2019. I am now delighted to be sharing my latest project, THE STILL POINT, a collection of poems and illustrations in an edition of 185 copies, with a further special edition of 10 full leather bound copies."

The Gallery at Green & Stone is pleased to announce THE STILL POINT. Limited to only 10 full leather-bound copies, the handcrafted pages showcase a blend of evocative verses and vivid imagery, creating a symbiotic relationship between words and pictures. Alongside, the book, the exhibition features 43 unique mixed-media works. Bringing together Sophie Brudenell-Bruce's work in print, collage and drawing, these pieces are a fantastic accompaniment and testimony to the time and skill that have gone into THE STILL POINT. The exhibition is a culmination of Sophie's ongoing dedication to her craft, exploration of media, and living a consciously creative life.

  • The central part of my work is involved in observing the human figure. The endless challenge of describing life and form through different media is both exciting and absorbing. In recent years my interest has also diversified into exploring light and space and how to harness these intangibles in their context to water, sky and masse.
