Meet the Judges

  • Holly Frean

    ARTIST

Holly Frean is an artist of exceptional dedication and vision. She began her formal training as an architect and draughtsman but painting portraits took over. Her studio practice has since grown to include picture-making in all its forms, typically oil paintings on canvas and gouaches on paper, also printmaking and 3D work. Infused with wit and humour, Holly’s work draws on the lives of artists and uniquely documents the subtleties in a face, body or movement.

“I will be very happy to see an artist showing their authentic self in their chosen medium. The serious artists I admire deeply and return to for inspiration are the ones who remind me what’s important in life: honesty, compassion, good hand-eye coordination and a sense of humour.”

  • Mary Miller

    FORMER DIRECTOR OF MARLBOROUGH CONTEMPORARY

Mary Miller worked at Marlborough Fine Art for 45 years until August 2022. She worked with many of the gallery artists, organising their exhibitions and producing catalogues in London and worldwide, notably with Paula Rego.

She became a successful sales person and helped advise UK and international clients with their collections.

As a Judge for Green & Stone, Mary is looking out for general composition, originality, good colour combinations and overall quality of paintwork and design. And a reflection by the artists on the work they produce.

  • Catrin Treadwell

    ARTIST

Catrin Treadwell worked as an announcer for the BBC World Service for many years. She studied at the Art Students League and Minerva’s Drawing School in New York and at Heatherleys in London. She teaches portraiture at 240 Project, a centre for the formerly homeless and vulnerable, in the shadow of the ill-fated Grenfell Tower. She is a trustee of F.A.I. UK (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) which cares for the built heritage and landscape of Italy. Originally from Wales, she has lived in New York, Paris, Vienna and London, which is now her permanent home.
