Artist Statement

I have built a practice based upon memories; how they appear and disappear. In my works, energy and fluidity are expressed through rhythmical marks, where the past and the present co-exist. My artworks express the intangible and ethereal character of memory, which acts as a mechanism in viewing the world. While the narratives are related to human emotions and intimate relationships. I choose to create poetic works with multiple interpretation possibilities. These days, I especially focus on watercolour works depicting people in exhibition spaces. This idea came from the concept of Isabelle Graw who is a renowned German curator; “Quasi-Person”. She says that the viewers can experience reflexive gaze by seeing paintings. In other words, viewers can reflect on themselves and expand their emotional perception by seeing works of art. This concept made me think about the viewers whenever I visited exhibition and allow me to paint them with watercolours. To be specific, I’m observing closely the viewer’s emotional reaction when they are appreciating the artworks. In other words, I am very interested in how the viewers interact with artworks. It’s almost like a two-way communication between the viewers and the artworks, whereby the works seem to come to life. To express these moments, I am trying to create accidental smudging effects by using watercolour paints.
