Artist Statement

Artist-curator, Cynthia Harrison Orr spent 2022 concentrating on developing her drawing practice at the Royal Drawing School, providing her with the tools and bank of knowledge from which to grow her practice.

Emotional Landscape: E-motion – energy in motion – flowing - in flux. Cynthia Harrison Orr’s practise comes from a life-long quest to access the pre-verbal core of being; to find a path into her innermost self, which, like the ebb and flow of water enables her to give voice to the inexpressible.

“My work is intuitive rather than cognitive. I usually work in colour with gouache, watercolour and ink. Outside in the landscape drawing from observation allows access into a state of being from which a meaningful image may emerge later in the studio. I also enjoy drawing figures from life. The marks weave and flow in layers, a mix of figurative and abstract elements. Sharing my work has proved to be essential to me. I am always looking for ways to collaborate with others and be seen.”

2022 saw Cynthia re-engage with the art world, exhibiting in and curating Studio 22’s exhibition at The Gallery at Green & Stone, London; and Studio 22’s stand at Fronteer Art Fair, Chester. Jackie Berridge of H-M-S Projects invited her to take part in ‘Telling Tales’, Platform Projects, Athens. October 2023 will see Cynthia back at Platform Projects, curating one of the six plots for H-M-S Projects and this summer The Royal Drawing School has awarded her an artist’s residency at Dumfries House, Scotland.
