Artist Statement
I am a UK-based artist, specializing in ink-on-paper portraits. I use psychoanalytic theories to research the viewing experience, identification and subjectivity of multiple-panel portraits, which I call ‘split portraiture’. My practice mainly involves portraying people. Ink-on-paper is my main medium as I believe that it can draw out my unconscious emotions and reactions to images.
The focus of my practice is to study people, aggressiveness and the act of looking by making split portraitures. In some of my works, I portray the hidden aggression between people. For my research, I investigate the contemporary relevance of the split portraiture and the reasons for it being a compelling form to create artworks.
I have been a finalist of several art competitions including the Summer Exhibition of Royal Academy of Arts (UK), The Discerning Eyes (UK), Neo Artprize (UK), Schwartz Gallery (UK), Hong Kong Art Prize (HK) and Eileen Chang Painting Award (HK).
I received a PhD in Fine art from University of Reading under the supervision of Professor Rachel Garfield.
