Artist Statement

I am an English artist who works in solitude in nature, specifically, in the ocean and along the coast. I am interested in the experience of time and place while immersed in the landscape over prolonged periods of time, working all the year around and directly with the elements. For the past decade or so I have been drawing a lived experience of what it is like to be physically submerged and floating while in the ocean. This drawing was made in the Atlantic Ocean off the Outer Hebrides in winter this year. Two drawings were lost to the elements, but two remained. I am, fascinated to take drawing where it has not been before. I am intrigued with how the ocean and nature can write its own mark on the paper. There is a slippage between subject and object that keep me going out there in the ocean. I am interested in using writing and scrawling of marks to draw a live record of time and experience, memory and loss when out there in the ocean. What of what has been lost can be found again.
