Sketching the Urban Landscape in Watercolour

Painting ‘En Plein-Air’ in Watercolour, participants will compose their own interpretation of Chelsea’s local scenery, a fusion of urban and natural forms. Recent winner of the St Cuthberts Mill award at the Green and Stone Works on Paper 2024 Exhibition, Lena Stogneva, will instruct how to capture the fleeting environment, and the London ambiance with controlled spontaneity in watercolour, working initially from observation. Later in the session attendants will learn how to refine their plein-air sketch imaginatively, nuancing the colours and tones, and taking inspiration from the Summer Exhibition in the Gallery space.

All levels are welcome.

All art materials provided by Green & Stone.

About Elena Stogneva

Now living with her family in Hertfordshire and working as a professional artist, Lena grew up in the Soviet Union/Russia. After her regular school day, she attended drawing school, where her passion for art began to flourish. Later, she earned a degree in Architecture, honing her perspective and geometry skills, particularly for drawing street views, urban scenes, and city skylines—her favorite subjects. Over the years, Lena has experimented with various materials, often creating quick pen sketches during holidays and in her spare time. Recently, she discovered watercolors, which have now become her preferred medium. Lena specializes in urban landscapes, capturing the play of light and shadow to convey the city's moods and emotions. She enjoys experimenting with angles, especially those that look down from vertiginous viewpoints. She views her art as visual storytelling, bridging contemporary art and illustration. “I believe you have to see and feel the subjects before you draw. It’s wonderful to capture the buzz of the city—its people, smells, and cultural mix—and translate that into my sketches and paintings. I like to see my pictures as messengers, and it makes me happy if others feel that emotion when they look at them,” says Lena.
